Top 5 Travel Skincare Tips

I’ve travelled a lot over the past six months. Seven countries, nine cities, eighteen flights and I’m about to embark on three more business trips next month! I’ve experienced drastic changes in temperature, dryness, humidity, pollution and all kinds of water in various hotels (with recycled, over-air-conditioned air of course). Needless to say, travelling can be stressful on my skin!

Travel Skincare Tips

Taking care of my skin is very important to me so I take precautions to avoid dehydration, sensitization and breakouts while I’m travelling. I always drink lots of water while maintaining a consistent skincare routine wherever I am, but I recently asked my friends at Dermalogica for their top five travel skincare tips – keep reading for their expert advice!

The key to healthy skin is hydration. Air travel dehydrates skin with humidity levels hovering at only 10% on most flights (humidity levels in homes range between 30-50%). Keep a travel size rehydrating toner in your carry-on bag and spritz  your face throughout the flight.

Dermalogica recommends their UltraCalming Mist (which is great for sensitive, sensitized skin like mine) or their Antioxidant Hydramist for those looking for added anti-aging benefits.

Warmer climates will increase oil production in the skin, so if you are prone to breakouts, be sure to pack a breakout control product to prevent pesky pimple pop-ups.

I always pack Dermalogica Skin Purfying Wipes in my carry-on so that I can wipe away impurities throughout long flights and I love their new Breakout Control product for overnight acne treatment and prevention.

Make sure to adjust your moisturizer based on the climate you’re travelling to so your skin doesn’t have to overcompensate. For example, I’m using heavier Skin Smoothing Cream in the Toronto winter, but I switch to lighter Active Moist when I travel to warmer climates.

Cold, dry climates call for heavier moisturizers and in warm, humid weather, you can lighten up!

Top 5 Travel Skincare Tips

I have fair skin, so sun protection is a year-round priority for me but it’s even more important when I’m travelling to hot and sunny destinations. Protect your skin against harmful UV rays with a minimum of SPF 15 in your skincare or makeup products.

Multitasking products, like Dermalogica Sheer Tint with SPF 20, are perfect to minimize the number of bottles to carry on your trip. It’s moisturizer, makeup and SPF in one tube. For extra protection and benefit, start with Skin Perfect Primer with SPF 30 – it smooths away fine lines, brightens and firms in addition to improving the longevity of your makeup in hot weather.

Top 5 Travel Skincare Tips

Sometimes no matter how much I try to avoid it, my skin still suffers from the stress of travelling. I always pack a masque on longer trips to give my skin some serious TLC when it needs it.

Dermalogica MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque rejuvenates tired skin with serious nutrition and hydration – my skin literally drinks it up! If you have redness-prone or itchy sensitive skin, try Dermalogica’s Ultra Calming Relief Masque to soothe angry skin.

There you have it – five solid travel skincare tips and top quality products to back them up! Don’t worry about packing full size products – Dermalogica has lots of travel friendly products and kits.

I’m off to California in March, then Florida and Hong Kong in April – so I’ll be packing my warm weather skincare essentials and putting these tips to the test! Once I’m back, I’ll be paying a visit to my local Dermalogica Skin Care Centre for a professional facial treatment too.
