I figured that I shouldn’t post the Spring 2012 Fashion Trends without talking about beauty trends too! Putting the fashion aside, the second most exciting aspect to come out of Fashion Week is the makeup trends. Some of these looks are theatrical and unwearable but every runway gives us a glimpse into next season’s must-have looks! Check out the hot beauty trends from NYFW…
Bold Lips: From ravishing reds and shocking deep purples to outrageous oranges and funky pinks, the bold lip trend is in full force on the runways and the streets! This look is all about keeping the rest of the make-up minimal while still keeping it punchy with a vibrant or dark statement lip color. We saw this trend at Prabal Gurung, Mugler, Betsey Johnson and my fave, the velvety red at Jason Wu.
Winged Eyeliner: Some of the runway trends should wait until spring to try out, but this is one you can wear now! Spring’s look will be ultra-exaggerated – no daintiness here (sigh). Think super fierce and drag that line out – way out. I prefer the more subtle cat eye, but this dramatic trend can be fun!
Wet Hair: Quite possibly the most low-maintenance look of the season. Wet hair has a youthful innocence that can also be glamorous when paired with bold eyes or lips. How do you keep hair looking wet after it’s dry? Stylists at NYFW saturated strands with argan oil to keep that glossy finish. Argan oil is a great treatment for your hair at the same time!
Streaks of Colour: Colored streaks of hair add edge to flowing waves or straight styles. At NYFW, blonde and light hair was decorated with streaks of peach and light pink while dark hair was contrasted with light strands. You can achieve this look without dying your hair – try colourful clip-in strands! Thakoon went bold with blue and pink clay slicked styles, but I prefer the subtle streaks.
Stick Ons & Embellishments: Makeup wasn’t the only thing used to accentuate looks on the runway; 3D cosmetic embellishments from paper stencils, sequins and paillettes to faux piercings and nail rings are hot this season! These abstract sticks-ons replaced traditional makeup on many runways at NYFW.
Big Retro Hair: The coiffeurs at NYFW craeted retro fifties styles and Jean Paul Gaultier paid some serious tribute to Amy Winehouse with her signature giant bouffants and winged eyeliner. Other runways saw big pin-up curls and larger than life french twists! Not so easy to replicate at home without a few cans of hairspray, but fun to watch!
Full Brows: Bold brows are back in a big way; from Derek Lam to Proenza Schouler, this season’s extra-full arches are boyish yet shapely. Don’t ditch your tweezers yet – full brows look feminine and polished when you give them a slight arch. You’ll find that bold brows make your eyes appear wider too – low maintenance is sexy!
Metallic & Smoky Eyes: Your favourite beauty brands will definitely be coming out with some metallic palettes after NYFW! Somewhat unusually for spring, heavy metal eye make-up was a big trend – from shimmering smoky navy lids at Rodarte to gold-leaf sheets along the brows at Fendi. I for one am loving the NARS Eurydice Eyeshadow Duo to achieve a smoky look with charcoal and vibrant purple.
My favourite Spring 2012 beauty trends are bold lips and full brows. I may even experiment with coloured clip-in strands this summer for fun! Let me know what your favourite Spring beauty trend is by answering the quick poll below.
