My hubby and I recently escaped from the city for a couple of days up north at Deerhurst Resort in Muskoka (near Huntsville, ON). We’ve decided not to take a tropical vacation this winter so our mini weekend getaway was a great way to unwind in the midst of our busy city lives and the “most depressing” time of year.
We chose Deerhurst Resort not only because of its picturesque rural location and stellar reputation, but because they have affordable winter pricing and pet-friendly rooms too! Whenever we think about going away, there’s the added complexity of finding someone to dog-sit, so it was great to be able to bring Pixel with us!
We first discovered Deerhurst Resort a few years ago (pre-G8 Summit fame) and we’ve visited a few times since through various seasons. Guests enjoy a sandy beach, outdoor pools, boating, fishing, golf, tennis and water sports in the summer and skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, snowmobiling, dog-sledding, sleigh rides and more in the winter! No matter what time of year you visit, there are activities for everyone including a brand new games room that made my hubby regress to his 12-year-old self for a few minutes.
After a lazy morning with Pixel, it was time for the spa! We both enjoyed 50 minute massages and I also enjoyed the world-famous Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment. The Shizen Spa is gorgeous and offers everything you could possibly want for a calming and pampered experience – slippers and robe included! The ladies’ room facilities were clean and cozy with a lounge area, separate stall showers, washroom, vanity, steam room and keypad lockers.
My massage was just what the doctor ordered – I fell asleep twice and reveled in that post-massage drunk feeling in the lounge between services. Isn’t that the best?!
As a religious Dermalogica user with sensitive skin, I’m always a little scared that my skin will freak out with new products. Shizen Spa at Deerhurst uses Pevonia skin care and I must admit that I enjoyed the products and did not experience any adverse reactions. Of course the Pevonia facial is just a lovely precursor to the highly anticipated Intraceuticals oxygen part of the facial…which was just as amazing the second time around! Read about my first oxygen facial experience here.
Our services at Shizen Spa were wonderful and performed by knowledgeable and experienced staff – just what we needed for our weekend retreat from the city!
After these amazing spa services, we took Pixel for a walk around the snow-covered resort grounds. It was a cold yet picturesque stroll intended to tucker the pooch out for the night – and it worked – we tucked her in to bed and went for a lovely dinner! We’ve tried all of the restaurants at Deerhurst and with their commitment to the local food movement as well as a seasonal harvest of their own, the Muskoka flavours are delicious! Tom and I are suckers for home-style comfort food and prefer a casual dining atmosphere, so naturally we fell for the Maple restaurant and look forward to it upon each visit. We shared a variety of yummy dishes including french onion soup, pulled pork flatbread pizza and crunchy chicken wings! It was the best weekend cheat meal in a long time!
Back in the room, we snuggled with our puppy, enjoyed in-room movies and drifted off into a post-spa-slash-food-induced coma! One of the best sleeps I’ve had in a while.
This trip was exactly what we needed. In just two days we recharged our batteries and headed back to the city feeling refreshed without spending a fortune. The whole weekend cost us about $350 including in-room movies and an abundance of food (not including the spa treatments). I highly recommend checking out Deerhurst Resort for the perfect little getaway with that special someone! The online reservation tool makes it easy and last I checked, there were still rooms available on and around Valentine’s Day – wink, wink! Here are a few more photos…
Thank you Deerhurst Resort for being wonderful hosts. I’m already thinking about our next Muskoka getaway!
