It’s that time of year again! I love playing dress up for seasonal photo shoots and this time it’s all about spring in the city! With so much fabulous fashion in Toronto, it brings me great joy to share my favourite local designers and boutiques with you.

When I discovered this beautifully curated local gem, I knew I’d be back for an editorial adventure! Introducing, Coal Miner’s Daughter

Starting this week, I’m featured on the eBay Canada Fashion Page in a pretty little banner with two other fabulous Canadian bloggers! I was thrilled when they asked me to share a sunny spring look! This one’s all about navigating neon…

I’m a big fan of the spring neon trend. It’s youthful, fun to style and nothing says “HELLO SUNSHINE!” like a bold shot of colour! My fashion friends rarely shy away from the latest trends, but when I’m around the office or friends in other industries, I don’t see the same willingness to play with colour and I almost never see neon. It can be an intimidating palette!

As the weather (slowly) warms up in Toronto, I’m starting to bring my neon purchases into rotation including a hot pink Kate Spade bag, a neon yellow clutch, skinny jeans and various neon blouses. I’m definitely more outgoing with colour combinations outside of work, but it’s not as difficult as you might think to make neon office appropriate.

Neon

The bold neon orange of the blouse is balanced with soft grey printed pants and classic black accessories for a trendy yet wearable spring look. Top it off with a statement necklace and retro sunnies and you’re ready to go from work to cocktails…preferably on a patio! Since the weather in Toronto is still a little chilly, I’m wearing dress socks with my lace-up oxford heels, but I can’t wait to rock this look sock-free!

Don’t be afraid to add a little neon to your wardrobe this spring – you might turn a few heads, but only because you’ll look absolutely AMAZING! Have questions about styling neon for spring? It was love at first sight when I discovered Shop for Jayu at an event last year. I was instantly attracted to the bold, trendy yet surprisingly affordable collection and if it wasn’t for my holiday budget, I would’ve bought half a dozen pieces right then and there!

Luckily, my patience paid off and I was thrilled to receive an invitation to attend their Spring 2013 First Call event last month. I’ve been on such an accessories kick this year and the Shop for Jayu Fresh Batch really rolls out the trends without breaking the bank (everything under $60). Founder, Sally Han, has curated another stunning collection of chic, well-crafted accessories made by talented artisans in Korea and sourced during her travels.

Bold metals, edgy spikes, sparkling crystals, geometric shapes, retro inspirations and more! I must’ve looked like a kid in a candy store, eyes wide and hands full of goodies! Luckily, with prices like these, it isn’t a budget-blowing long-term commitment to pick up a few trendy pieces – even if I’ll want more next season. Here’s a sneak peek at my purchases, which you’ll see in Dainty Outfits to come!

Diamonds are a girls best friend, but in the days of arm parties and statement necklaces (collar candy), we can’t always afford the real thing while keeping up with the latest trends.

The Black Box Boutique in Yorkville celebrates beautiful jewellery catering to a wide variety of tastes, trends and budgets. Owner/Buyer, Lilla Balint, is also a passionate jewellery designer and she curates a stunning collection of standout pieces ranging in price from $50 to $500. You’ll find beautiful baubles from up and coming Canadian designers as well as unique international collections that you won’t find anywhere else in Toronto.

Black Box Boutique

This small second-floor space in Yorkville is beautifully renovated (designed by Lilla herself) and reminiscent of a glittering jewellery box! Crisp white washed walls and furniture, recessed glass display cases and mirrors anchored by an exposed brick wall and an eye-catching jeweled chandelier. Within minutes of my first visit to The Black Box Boutique, I had a wishlist worth dreaming about!

My photographer friend, Aleyah Solomon, and I were immediately inspired and set out to style a creative shoot focused on stunning statement jewellery and eccentric beauty. We selected our favourite pieces from a variety of lines to ensure that our shoot would highlight the incredible selection of jewels at The Black Box Boutique.

We imagined wild hair, costume lashes, bold lips, big jewels and the occasional use of a top hat – think Mad Hatter! Hair stylist, Charise Bauman, spent an hour curling tiny sections of my hair with a thin curling iron, and while I got a kick out of the tight jerry curls, I LOVED the amplified frizzy curls we got after brushing them out! The hairstyle looked great down, pinned up or thrown on top of my head for a curly mohawk look – I loved the way it moved in the fan too! Wish I could replicate this look on my own.

Makeup artist, Nikki Reyes, went all out with three varieties of Makeup Forever false lashes and fun shades of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics on my eyes and lips. My favourite look (pictured above) included white feather lashes, black winged liner and nude lips with my hair thrown up on the top of my head and a pair of statement earrings.

After two hours of hair and makeup and three more hours shooting seven different looks, I’m SO pleased with the results and excited to share these photos with you!

I still can’t believe that’s me! I had so much fun doing this shoot with my friends and sharing an incredible local boutique in the process. Special thanks to Lilla Balint at The Black Box Boutique for trusting us with her jewels for the day – I can’t wait to purchase some of these gorgeous baubles for myself! I have my sights on the Noir pieces!

When I decided to start this blog as my New Year’s Resolution, I never would’ve dreamed that just six months later, I’d be styling and starring in my own fashion photo shoot.  It’s been a whirlwind blogging adventure since the first post on January 28, 2012 and I still can’t believe some of the people I’ve met and the fabulous fashion events that I’ve been fortunate to attend.

With so many talented fashion bloggers out there, I focus on what I know and love – the Toronto fashion and beauty scene, inspirational local entrepreneurs and most importantly, attainable, wearable fashion that allows me to embrace the dainty side of current trends!

When the lovely Leanna Gosse of Lee Weston Photography, suggested collaborating on a fashion photo shoot, I jumped at the opportunity to work with her! I’ve always wanted to let the stylist in me shine beyond my own Dainty Outfit posts, so this was the perfect time to feature some of my favourite local designers and the fall fashion and beauty trends that appeal to me.

I have alter egos when it comes to fashion. While I’m drawn to all things dainty, I have an equal obsession with soft, romantic bohemian styles as well as structured and shapely glam styles – my closet is a reflection of this as are my fall 2012 shopping desires. The Dainty Girl Alter Egos seemed like the perfect theme for the photo shoot; so I set out to style Bohemian Romance and Urban Glam!

I decided to focus on two of my favourite up-and-coming Canadian designers and their Fall 2012 Collections:

These two lovely designers made their collections available to me for the shoot and the vision blossomed from there. Fast forward through a few weeks of planning, countless hours running around the city pulling pieces for the shoot in my spare time (I have a full time job) and the shoot went off without a hitch – minus the fire ants and mosquito bites 😉

Considering it was my first time playing the model and the stylist, and Leanna’s first fashion photo shoot – I’m so incredibly proud of the results! After 8 hours of shooting, sore feet and growling tummies, Leanna still managed to send me a stunning sampling of photos the following day. I’m blown away with these photos and can’t believe that’s me! It was super fun playing dress up and showing off such beautiful fashion. Hope you enjoy this sneak peek…

I can’t believe it’s over…still high on the rush of it all and can’t wait to share more of this experience and the photos with you! I’ll be sure to go into the fall fashion and beauty trends that we captured as well as the wonderful designers and vendors that came together to make this happen. I can honestly say that I’ve made some fabulous new friends in the process and can’t wait to work with them again! The biggest thrill of all? Supporting and showcasing the INCREDIBLE fashion and beauty of Toronto and collaborating with so many inspiring local entrepreneurs. I am constantly impressed by the creativity and innovation in this city. Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you for making this happen with me! xoxo
