I LOVE NYC!
The shopping, the restaurants, the nightlife…everything! One of my closest girlfriends is lucky enough to live there and by association, I get to have a free place to stay when I visit! Hooray! When Porter airlines offers 50% off flights, I’m crazy not to go for a round trip that costs only $250. With so many unique neighbourhoods and countless department stores and boutiques, it’s impossible to choose a top 3 or even a top 10.
What I’ll try to do with this post, is show you some of my favourite shopping neighbourhoods and some go-to places for great deals and unique styles.
My friend lives right around the corner from Herald Square. Home to the beloved Macy’s (*hallelujah*). Even with all the options in NYC, I still love Macy’s the most. With 12 floors, it’s the world’s largest store and heaven on earth for fashionistas and shoppers like me! There’s something for everyone; from budget-friendly to high-end designers and there’s always a sale on!
Herald Square also boasts some other big names like Zara, Victoria’s Secret, H&M and Sephora so why not hit them all up at the same time?! The corner of 34th and Broadway is a must stop on any NYC itinerary!
Also nearby, you’ll find Times Square. It’s a must-see for NYC first-timers, but otherwise, it’s packed full of camera happy tourists and gridlock traffic. That said, if you’re going to stop by, most of your favourite brand name stores are there and they stay open late. I once bought some skinny jeans at the Times Square Forever 21 at 1am. It really is the city that never sleeps!
For atmosphere, top marks have to go to Soho. Notable for being the location of many art galleries, the streets are lined with a wide variety of stores and shops ranging from trendy boutiques to outlets of upscale national and international chain stores. The architecture alone is worth the visit, but stay for Kate Spade, Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacob, Miu Miu and Stella McCartney!
While you’re in Soho, armed with your credit card and a Dean & Deluca latte, visit Topshop (at Broadway and Broome) for an overwhelming combination of neon lights, flashy signs, glitzy frocks and teetering platform heels. This Brit brand is known for trendy styles and mid-range prices. Don’t miss it – four floors of shopping fun!
Midtown Manhattan and the Upper East Side showcase a tempting parade of couture designers. I usually stick to window shopping along 5th, Madison or Park Avenue, wiping the drool as I pass Chanel and Dior. The shopping possibilities don’t end there though; the big 3 high-end department stores offer a luxurious experience with some noteworthy sales!
Throughout 9 floors of decadent fashions and products, Barney’s shoppers are often treated to discount prices with seasonal sales and celebrity sightings!
Saks 5th Avenue is an Upper East Side art deco landmark. Offering the finest designer collections for men and women, as well as accessories, cosmetics and gifts. Occupying an entire block and10 floors, Saks features elegant in-store boutiques for high-end classic and contemporary designers. Bonus: Their online store ships to Canada!
Bergdorf Goodman caters to sophisticated, conservative shoppers while offering extensive designer collections to satisfy modern tastes. This stately building features 8 floors of designer bliss, including spacious in-store boutiques furnished with swanky dressing rooms with Central Park views. The expansive beauty level is sweetly-scented cosmetics mayhem. Love it!
The Lower East Side and East Village offer quirky, vintage collections and the best independent shops in NYC. These eclectic hoods are predominantly occupied by artists, hipsters, students, writers and musicians. St. Mark’s Place, one of the neighborhood’s most famous streets, is lined with bars, restaurants and small, friendly shops.
There isn’t much in the way of shopping in Lower Manhattan, but one store makes it worth the trip. Century 21 makes high fashion affordable every day. Think Winners on steroids, with up to 65% off top designers – 100% of the time. It takes patience to wade through the racks with other bargain shoppers, but if you set the time aside and stay calm, you will find some AMAZING deals!
While you’re down there, wave hello to Lady Liberty!
There’s something for everyone in NYC and while I only touched on some neighbourhoods and stores in this post, every pocket of this glorious city has shopping adventures worth blogging about! One of these days I’ll get around to diarizing the NYC dining experience…3 meals a day simply isn’t enough!
Have you had any mind-blowing shopping experiences in NYC? Do tell!
